Music and the signs of the zodiac
Music artists and astrology. How have the zodiac signs influenced the musical inclinations of many music artists? Explore how this talent is related to the star signs.
Key Musical Astrological Significators
When you tap a rock with a tuning fork its musical properties resonate, maybe this is why the signs associated with the element of earth - that’s Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn – always seem to hit the right notes…
While it might not be the most credible music event in the world, The Eurovision Song Contest takes plays in May, astrologically speaking, in the same way Halloween suits the nature of the sign it falls under, Scorpio, and The Edinburgh Festival happens when the sun is in theatrical Leo.
So, what exactly makes May musical? The sun is in the first earth sign, Taurus, for most of it at least, and if the devil has all the best tunes then the earth signs aren’t far behind him. A simple swab from the world of popular music and beyond throws up a chorus line of people born under these signs, or with them prominent in their charts, with the closest thing to ‘natural’ musical ability.
Barbra Streisand, Adele, Ella Fitzgerald and a chorus line of others born under this sign has a voice that sounds good enough to eat. Taurus does rule the throat in astrology, so as well as sweet singers, this sign boasts the velvety Joanna Lumley and BBC newsreader Fiona Bruce.
Other Bulls with towering musical ability/great set of pipes include Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Prokoviev, Liberace, Grace Jones, Stevie Wonder, Roy Orbison, Bjorn from Abba, Billy Joel, James Brown, Enrique Iglesias, Chris Brown, Janet Jackson, Bing Crosby, Luther Vandross, Glen Campbell, Englebert Humperdinck, Pete Townsend, Perry Como, Mike Oldfield, Tammy Wynette, Cher, Bono and Enya.
Then we have the genius music producer Giorgio Moroder (Of Donna Summer’s I Feel Love fame, a song that arguably transformed the soundscape), Burt Bacharach, David Byrne and the fleet-footed Mr. Fred Astaire.
I suppose the science of music and all its component parts can’t help but appeal to the most detail-oriented of all the signs, and many of the planet’s biggest musical stars from the last few decades have been born under the sign of Virgo. Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Pink, Shania Twain, Amy Winehouse, Buddy Holly, Freddie Mercury, Patsy Cline, Andrea Bocelli, Mama Cass and Gloria Estefan is merely a light dusting of them.
Musical history is dominated by others who have a sizeable Virgo influence, like Mozart (rising), Madonna (rising and moon, plus Like a Virgin was the album that really sent her stratospheric) Mick Jagger (rising), and Paul Simon (rising).
As well as knowing the notes to sing they also get where they are because they work hard, and possess brains that get a kick out of interpreting alien languages. Talented Virgo musicians include Leonard Bernstein, Charlie Parker and Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics, likewise Elvis Costello. Kate Bush also has a big Virgo thing going on in her chart.
Then we come to Capricorn, the sign of the King. And Elvis is in good company, sharing his sign with David Bowie, Dolly Parton and the late Donna Summer, as well as musical genius, Phil Spector. Capricorn Calvin Harris recently broke some kind of record for the most hit singles off one album, trumping Michael Jackson. Perhaps he’ll have a posthumous music award named after him one day like fellow Goat Ivor Novello?
Other late December/January born singers include Annie Lennox, Marilyn Manson, Janis Joplin, Mary J Blige, R Kelly, PSY, Toyah, Ricky Martin, Shirley Bassey, Sade, Pat Benatar, Marlene Dietrich, Vanessa Paradis, Rod Stewart, Maurice Gibb, the late Frankie Da Knuckles and Ellie Goulding.
Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Rihanna also have a strong Capricorn energy in their charts.
The Rest of the Zodiac
Of course the earth signs don’t have the monopoly on a good tune, and so here’s a staccato look at how to spot singers/songwriters from the rest of the Zodiac.
Shouty, extrovert Aries singers include Aretha Franklin and Jesse J, plus this sign’s extravagant nature comes out in its performance style. Look no further than Elton John.
Gemini singers tend to have more of a relaxed vocal style, like Peggy Lee (although she has a chart with strong Taurus/Virgo leanings). Intelligent, thought-provoking pop from Morrissey and Paul McCartney is also typical of this sign, as is a strong sense of musicianship, just like its Zodiac cousin, Virgo. Prince, Brian Wilson from The Beach Boys, Barry Manilow and Noel Gallagher are also born under this sign.
Cancerian singer/songwriters often write about feelings and memories, like Pet Shop Boy Neil Tenant and George Michael, or have a kooky quality like Cyndi Lauper, Rosin Murphy, Carly Simon and Debbie Harry. Rodgers and Hammerstein were also born under this sign and wrote feel-good favourites like The Sound of Music and South Pacific. Family and water themes are very Cancerian.
Leo singers are creative performers, like Kate Bush, Tori Amos and Madonna. They are mostly frustrated luvvies who always strive to bring a theatrical quality to every performance.
Libra John Lennon stood for peace, love and equality in his music – all the textbook Libran traits.
Perhaps the cleverest lyricists/musicians of all. Joni Mitchell, Neil Hannon of the Divine Comedy, and Bjork combine a mixture of witty observations and a deeply confessional style.
Rebellious rockers Ozzie Osbourne, Keith Richards, Billy Idol and Frank Zappa all share this sign. In the cool corner we find Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix. Although they all kind of converge on Self-Destruction Strip. Beethoven and Mozart also had their moons in Sagittarius, adding a visionary quality to their compositions.
Songs by Aquarians often have an observational edge to them, like Robbie Williams, or a humanitarian quality, like Bob Marley or Phil Collins. This is also the sign of the progressive, and we can see this in prog rocker Peter Gabriel‘s work. You also get the sense of them being outsiders looking in, as is the case with Carole King.
Like the late Karen Carpenter and Kurt Cobain, Pisces has a certain vulnerability in the way it performs. This sign can also be in the habit of suffering for their art, or are guilty of taking themselves a little too seriously like Chris Martin, X Factor’s James Arthur, Justin Bieber and Will.i.am.
