Virgo Characteristics and Personality
(August 23 – September 22)
The first semi-circle of the Zodiac, comprising the six signs that symbolise the formation of the ‘I’ (i.e. the Ego), is completed with Virgo –a ‘vital’ sign in that this is the stage where the individual develops critical thinking.
The symbol of Virgo is the Maiden, usually portrayed holding an ear of corn, which represents the harvest and the ripening of fruits.
As is the case with Gemini, Virgo is ruled by Mercury. Contrary to Gemineans, however, the mission of Virgo people is not to collect information, but to distinguish the useful pieces of information from the useless ones. They are highly capable of separating and analysing data, and –being renowned for their critical thinking– they are equally good at making the distinction between what needs to be done now and what can be done later. This is what makes them uniquely good at setting priorities.
An issue Virgos often have to deal with is their need for perfection. In case they find something they have worked on to be imperfect, they feel like they will get swallowed up in chaos, which constitutes their greatest fear. Their inability to live in a chaotic environment is also the reason why they are known to be obsessed with order and cleanliness –although it is not completely unusual for them to be extremely untidy, influenced by the chaotic nature of their opposite sign, Pisces. Their stress stems from their fear of making the wrong choice, and that is why they are often indecisive and insistent on sticking to the schedule as planned.
Contrary to Leos (who directly precede them), Virgos are self-effacing and have an aversion to being at the centre of attention, because their role is to serve rather than lead.
People with Virgo prominent in their birth chart are very observant and have an eye for detail –which ties in with their natural preference for small objects as ensuring they will not call attention to themselves. This trait, however, often reaches the point where they cannot see the forest for the trees, meaning they miss the big picture because of concentrating too much on analysing details.
What is very important to note is that Virgo people are more critical of themselves than of others, and that is why they are characterised by modesty, humbleness, and a desirably independent nature.
